What is the Root Cause of not being able to Lose Weight?

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

What is the root cause of not being able to lose weight you ask?

Well first of all I would like to point out that this is never a question, I get because most of us believe that there is a simple formula and it always goes like this:

Eat Less + Exercise More = Weight Loss.

What do I think?

I call BS.

Before I get into, I want to point out that yes, sometimes it is a simple case of eating better and moving your body more. It really depends on where you are at in your weight loss journey.

If you have tried countless diets and still aren’t getting the results, I can say with confidence that eating less and exercising more is not at the root of your problem.

And when you aren’t going straight to the root of it, it’s no wonder all your efforts are going right down the drain, and most likely out of your wallet considering the diet industry is a billion-dollar one.

For most of us, including myself, there is a more complex reason behind why we are having such a hard time losing weight and most importantly, keeping it off.

For me, the root of my problems have always been my digestive system. I have gone through 3 different times in my life where I have all of a sudden gained 10-15 pounds without any change in what I eat or how I exercise. How can this be?

If you are used to thinking that those traditional things are at the root of your problems, I know it sounds crazy right?

For me – the first time it happened I ended up having Candida and the second and third time I had something called SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). Both of these things make you have an array of food sensitives and leaky gut – causing a boat load of inflammation in my body (aka – this is what the weight was – it was actually inflammation not fat).

I even tried eliminating all carbs, sugar and alcohol for 2 weeks and I didn’t drop 1 pound. I can’t get any more proof that eating better and exercising more was not at the root of my problems, and if you aren’t figuring out what the root is, the problem will keep coming back.

I also just want to point out here that right now I still have SIBO and I am actively treating it. I would say I am about 50 % there – just letting you know that root cause problems take time to heal, there is no overnight quick fix unfortunately. I also think it’s important to note this because one of my pet peeves is Health Coaches feeling like they have be perfect or have it all figured out, and if they don’t, they should hide it. I went years feeling like this, and I am no longer willing to do it.

OK, so back to the root cause. There are many different reasons why you might not be able to lose weight or keep it off. I would say the most common problems I see are:

- Stress and Cortisol Levels

- Insulin / Blood Sugar Problems

- Other Hormonal Problems or Imbalances (thyroid, endometriosis, etc)

- Digestive Imbalances (candida, SIBO, leaky gut)

- Mental / Emotional Blocks / Hidden Beliefs
